How Far in Advance Should You Book a Gulf Shores Beach House? A Season-by-Season Guide

The honest answer to "how far in advance should I book?" is that it depends on the week, and on how many people are coming. A couple choosing a quiet week in November can decide the month before. A reunion of thirty-five choosing the last week of June has already left it late if it is still thinking about it in March.

Here is how I would think about it, season by season, from someone who answers these enquiries himself. I have kept it to guidance rather than hard rules, because every year is a little different, and where I say "in our experience," that is exactly what I mean: our two houses, our guests, not a market study.

Why group size changes the answer

If you are booking a two-bedroom condo, there are hundreds of near-identical alternatives and missing one costs you very little. If you are booking for twenty, the pool of alternatives shrinks to a handful of houses. For forty-plus, it shrinks to almost none. Our guide to beachfront homes for 20+ guests and the one on trips that sleep forty go into why.

The practical rule: the bigger the group, the earlier you decide. That is not salesmanship. It is just arithmetic about how few houses of that size exist.

Summer

June and July are the beach at its busiest, and those weeks go first. If you know the week you want, ask early. If your group can move by even a week, ask what is open on either side, because the first and last weeks of the season tend to be easier than the middle.

Spring break

Spring break here stretches across roughly March and the first part of April, and families plan around school calendars that differ from county to county. That means the demand arrives in waves rather than all at once. Decide your dates as soon as your school calendar is out, and check them with us before you commit to flights.

Lemonshello sleeps up to twenty, one of very few houses that size on this stretch of coast.

Easy Breezy sleeps up to forty-four, or can be booked by the half.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's

Holiday weeks are the ones families tend to plan the furthest ahead, because the dates are fixed and the group often includes people who need to book time off and travel. If a holiday week at the beach is something you want, ask in the autumn, not the week before. Our Christmas and New Year's guide covers what the week is like once you are here.

The quiet months

From October through February the coast slows down, and so does the booking pace. Plenty of guests decide a few weeks out. The exception is the snowbird season: people who want a month or more tend to plan well ahead, because a long stay takes arranging at home. Our snowbird guide and the snowbird rentals page cover how that works. If you are eyeing a winter week and want a heated pool, read this first.

What to do before you ask

1. Pin down your dates, and your fallback dates. A group with two acceptable weeks is in a much better position than a group with one.

2. Count heads honestly. Include the cousin who might come. It is easier to plan for twenty and have eighteen than the reverse.

3. Decide what matters most. Beachfront, pool, bedrooms under one roof, a particular week. You will probably have to give on one.

4. Ask the owner what is open. We answer enquiries ourselves, and a plain "here is what is available" is quicker than guessing from a calendar.

Common questions

How early for summer? As soon as your dates are fixed. Summer weeks fill first, and big houses have few substitutes.

Can I book last minute? Sometimes, outside the peak weeks. Quiet months often have close-in dates. Summer, spring break and holidays rarely do.

Should a big group book earlier? Yes. There are very few houses of that size, so the earlier you decide, the more likely you get yours.

If you have dates in mind, send them over and I will tell you what is open at Lemonshello (up to twenty) or Easy Breezy (up to forty-four), and whether it is worth deciding now or waiting. The things-to-do guide is a good companion while you plan.
