Winter on the Gulf
From November through March, our two beachfront houses in Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan switch from reunion mode to snowbird mode — monthly stays, heated pools, and empty-beach mornings. Booked direct with the family that owns them, at winter rates that surprise people.
Most snowbirds default to a one-bedroom condo and spend three months in a galley kitchen. The move we've watched grow every year: two or three couples who enjoy each other split one large beachfront house. Everyone gets a real bedroom and bathroom, you share a full kitchen and a great room, and the per-couple cost of a winter month often lands near what a mediocre condo would have charged each of you anyway. We wrote honestly about what winter down here is actually like — including the real January temperatures.
Lemonshello (Gulf Shores, 8 bedrooms) suits two or three couples with room to spare — heated pool, hot tub that runs all year, and the beach as your backyard for those daily winter walks. Easy Breezy (Fort Morgan, a mirrored duplex) splits into two complete 9-bedroom halves — a larger group of couples can take one side, each half with its own kitchen, elevator and heated pool, on the quiet end of the peninsula.
Winter is the best-value season on this coast by a wide margin, and monthly stays are priced as monthly stays — not thirty nightly rates stacked up. Rather than publish a number that goes stale, we quote winter months directly: tell us your dates and group size and we'll give you a straight figure, including what's covered. Two things worth asking anyone you book winter with (us included): what the pool-heat arrangement is — heating a pool in January is a real cost and different owners handle it differently — and what a month includes in utilities and cleaning cadence. We'll put both in writing.
Two weeks to the whole season. Monthly stays get the best pricing; multi-month winters are our favorite kind of guest.
Snowbird stays book roughly seventy days out on average, and the large houses go earliest. For a January arrival, early autumn is the right time to talk; for November, sooner.
Honestly: January averages a high near 59°F, with lovely low-70s stretches and short cold snaps. It's not tropical — it's not-scraping-your-windshield weather, with empty beaches. The full picture is in our snowbird guide.
Nearly everything — restaurants, golf, Gulf State Park, The Wharf — plus an organized snowbird social calendar. The difference is you can get a table.
Ask us — policies vary by home and season, and we'd rather give you a straight answer for your dates than a blanket rule.
Tell us your dates, your group, and how long you're thinking. We'll answer with a real monthly figure and an honest opinion on which house fits — usually the same day.
