November is the month people ask me about with a slightly apologetic tone, as if wanting the beach after Halloween needs explaining. It doesn't. It is one of my favourite months down here, and it is also not for everybody, so here is the plain version: what the weather really does, what is on, what is open, and who tends to love it.
Where I give numbers, they are long-run averages, not promises. A November week can hand you five days of 75 and sunshine or a front that parks itself over the coast for two days. Usually it is some of each.
The weather, in real numbers
The average afternoon high in Gulf Shores in November is around 69 or 70 degrees, and the average overnight low is in the mid-50s. For comparison, October averages in the high 70s and December in the low 60s, so November is the hinge of the season: the first week often still feels like October, and by Thanksgiving you will want a sweatshirt after dark.
Rain averages about four inches for the month, which mostly arrives with passing fronts rather than as daily afternoon storms the way it does in summer. The humidity is gone. Hurricane season officially runs to November 30, but the heart of it is well behind us by then.
One practical thing: the clocks go back on the first Sunday of the month, so sunset lands around five o'clock. Plan the beach walk for late afternoon and dinner after. If you want the wider picture, our season-by-season guide covers the other eleven months.
Can you swim?
In the Gulf, some people do, early in the month. The water is around 70 degrees at the start of November and cools from there. Most of our November guests wade, walk, fish from the sand and leave the actual swimming to the pool. If a warm pool matters to your group, read what "heated" really means before you book anywhere, including with us.
What is on in November 2026
Early November is busier than you would guess. These are the dates as listed by Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism at the time of writing; check before you build a trip around one.
Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival, November 5–15. In its 42nd year. Eleven days of songwriters playing their own songs in bars and listening rooms along the Alabama and Florida coast, the Flora-Bama among them. Many shows are free. It is the best reason I know to come in November.
Experience the Oyster, November 6–7. An oyster weekend at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, with the main event on the Saturday.
Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival, November 7–8. At Gulf Place, on the public beach in Gulf Shores.
Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show, November 6–7. Over in Pensacola Beach, so a day trip from here rather than a walk, but worth knowing about if you have pilots or grandchildren in the group.
Coastal Half Marathon, 5K and Fun Run, November 28. Through Gulf State Park on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Our events calendar keeps the rest of the year.
What is open, and what the days look like
Nearly everything. This is a year-round town now, not a place that boards up in September. Restaurants are open and you can walk into most of them without a wait, though a few shorten their hours midweek, so it is worth a quick check before you drive. Where the locals eat is a good place to start.
A typical November day in one of our houses goes something like this: coffee on the deck in a sweatshirt, a long walk on a beach you mostly have to yourselves, lunch out, an afternoon of fishing, golf, the trails at Gulf State Park or the old fort at Fort Morgan, then back for sunset and a long dinner in. The things-to-do guide has the full list.
Who November suits
It suits couples and groups of couples splitting a house, friends' trips, multi-generation families who care more about being together than about the water temperature, music people, anglers, and anyone working remotely who would rather do it with a Gulf view. It also suits the budget: November rates run well below summer.
It does not suit a trip where the children's whole plan is to be in the ocean from breakfast to dinner. Come in June for that, and book it early.
If you are thinking about a longer stay that runs on into winter, the snowbird guide picks up where this leaves off.
What to pack
Layers. Shorts and a T-shirt for the middle of the day, a sweatshirt or light jacket for mornings and evenings, and something windproof if you plan to be on a boat or the beach at dawn. Bring a swimsuit for the pool and the hot tub. Leave the beach umbrella at home; in November you will want the sun.
Common questions
Is November a good time to visit? For a quiet, mild, good-value week, yes. For a swimming holiday, no.
How warm is it? Highs around 69 to 70 on average, lows in the mid-50s, warmer early in the month than late.
Can you swim in the Gulf? Early in the month, if you are hardy. Most people use the pool.
What is there to do? The songwriters festival, the oyster weekend, the park, the fort, fishing, golf and an empty beach.
As I write this, Lemonshello (up to twenty) still has a few open stretches in early and mid-November, and Easy Breezy can often be booked by the half at this time of year. If November sounds like your kind of beach, send me your dates and I will tell you what is open.
