We get some version of this text almost every week: "Okay, we made it — where do we actually eat?" So we finally wrote it all down. My family has lived and eaten up and down this coast for years, and this is the honest list we hand our own guests — no sponsored nonsense, just where we send friends and family, grouped by the kind of night you're after. Fair warning: it leans hard on Gulf seafood, because down here that's the whole point.
On the water
The move we make with out-of-town family every single time: a table over the water, a basket of fried shrimp, and a sunset doing its thing behind the boats. Yes, these are the "everybody knows them" spots — they earned it. Easy with kids, hard to have a bad time.
- LuLu's (Gulf Shores) — Lucy Buffett's sprawling waterfront spot at Homeport Marina, with a beach-party feel, a playground and live music. A rite of passage with kids.
- The Hangout (Gulf Shores) — right on the public beach, famous for its foam parties and giant patio. Touristy, yes, but a genuinely fun family night.
- Tacky Jacks — laid-back waterfront dives with locations around the area, including one out on Fort Morgan. Cold drinks, casual seafood, boats drifting by.
Casual local seafood
Now the spots we hit on our own night off — no frills, no line for a water view, just really good Gulf seafood. Do yourself one favor while you're here and order the royal red shrimp at least once. They only come out of the deep water off our coast, they taste almost like lobster, and you'll spend the rest of your life trying to find them again inland. A grouper sandwich and you've done it right.
- Doc's Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar — no-frills fried seafood and oysters, a longtime favorite.
- Sea-N-Suds — an old-school beachfront shack for fried shrimp and a view.
- Flora-Bama (the state line) — as much institution as bar: oysters, bushwackers, and live music on multiple stages, straddling the Alabama–Florida line. Worth a stop even if just for the story.
Special-occasion nights
Anniversary, milestone birthday, or you just want white tablecloths and a real wine list without a foam party in the background? This is where we go when we're celebrating something — the marina restaurants around Orange Beach. Fresh, elevated Gulf cooking, water views, worth the reservation.
- Fisher's at Orange Beach Marina — a dressed-down dockside room and an upscale upstairs, both excellent.
- Cobalt, Cosmo's and Big Fish (Orange Beach) — dependable picks for a polished waterfront dinner and a good cocktail.
- The Wharf (Orange Beach) — a cluster of restaurants, so the indecisive can wander and the Ferris wheel keeps the kids happy.
Staying beachfront makes dinner easy
Both of our houses put you minutes from the water and the restaurants — or set up perfectly for a chef to cook in. Pick your dates and see what's open.
Check AvailabilityThe Fort Morgan side
Fort Morgan is quieter and more spread out, so plan a little. There are relaxed waterfront spots out on the peninsula (including a Tacky Jacks by the marina) for days you don't want to drive back toward town. For most Fort Morgan stays, the smart play is to stock the house for a few meals and save the drive for one or two special dinners in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach — about 20–25 minutes east.
Feeding the whole group
With a big house and a big kitchen, some of the best meals never leave home. A few things we tell every group:
- Order a seafood boil for night one. Low-country-boil caterers will deliver and cook shrimp, crab, sausage, corn and potatoes right at the house — the easiest crowd-pleaser there is.
- Hire a private chef for the big night. Local chefs will plan a menu, shop, cook and clean up. For a reunion or a milestone, it beats wrangling a 20-top reservation.
- Buy off the boat. Markets around Bon Secour and the marinas sell fresh Gulf shrimp and fish — grab a cooler's worth and grill on the deck at sunset.
We're happy to connect guests with the caterers and chefs we trust — just ask when you book.
FAQ
What food is Gulf Shores known for?
Gulf seafood — royal red shrimp, fresh grouper and snapper, oysters, and low-country-style seafood boils. Most casual spots serve fried and grilled Gulf catch, and local markets sell shrimp practically straight off the boat from nearby Bon Secour.
Where do locals eat in Gulf Shores?
Locals favor the casual, off-the-boat seafood spots and waterfront dives over the busiest tourist strips. For a special night out, the upscale marina restaurants around Orange Beach are the go-to.
Can you get a private chef or seafood boil delivered to a beach house?
Yes. Private chefs and low-country-boil caterers will cook right at the house, and local markets sell fresh shrimp and fish for the group to cook. For a large rental it's often the easiest way to feed everyone — ask us and we'll connect you.
