Planning a Church Retreat at a Gulf Shores Beach House: A Guide for Groups of 20 to 44

The Gulf-front great room on one side of Easy Breezy, the 18-bedroom duplex in Fort Morgan, Alabama, where church groups hold their sessions

We host church groups at Easy Breezy, and we are a church family ourselves, so I have sat on both sides of this planning. The questions are always the same: where does everyone sleep, where do we meet, who is cooking, and what does it cost per head. Here is how a retreat actually works at a big beach house, so you can decide whether it fits before you ask me for dates.

Why a house instead of a camp or a hotel

A retreat center gives you a meeting hall and bunk rooms. A hotel gives you a block of doors and a conference room you rent by the hour. A house gives you one roof, which changes the feel of the weekend more than anything else. Nobody drives back to a room at nine o'clock. The conversations that matter happen in the kitchen at midnight and on the balcony before breakfast, and that only works when everyone is under the same roof.

Easy Breezy is built for exactly this. It is a duplex in Fort Morgan with two mirror-image sides, each with nine bedrooms, its own kitchen, its own heated pool and its own elevator. Book one side and you sleep 22; book both and you sleep 44 across 18 bedrooms and 19 baths. For a smaller leadership retreat, Lemonshello in Gulf Shores sleeps 20 in eight bedrooms, every one with its own bath.

Who sleeps where

This is the spreadsheet that usually eats the first planning meeting, so here is the shape of it. Each side of Easy Breezy has mostly king suites, several with balcony access, plus a queen room and a bunk nook on the upper floors. That mix matters for a church group: couples and older members take the king suites, singles pair up in the queen rooms, and the bunk nooks go to whoever is youngest or most willing. With 19 baths for 44 people nobody is lining up in a hallway with a towel.

One practical trick: if your group has clear halves, say married couples and a men's or women's group, give each half its own side. The two sides share a wall and a beach, not a hallway, so each group gets its own quiet without anybody feeling split off. The one-side-or-whole-house guide walks through the layout floor by floor.

Meeting space and meals

Each side has a Gulf-front great room on the main living level, open to the kitchen and the deck. Forty people fit in one of them for a session if you pull the dining chairs in; most groups run teaching in one great room and set up meals on the other side, so nobody is stacking chairs between worship and lunch. In the shoulder seasons the pool decks work as a second room: evening sessions outside with the Gulf going quiet behind you are the part people talk about on the drive home.

Meals are where two kitchens earn their keep. One side cooks breakfast while the other sets up for the group meal, or you split the cooking teams by day. Both kitchens are fully stocked for a crowd. If you would rather not cook at all, the local restaurants are a fifteen-to-twenty-minute drive, and a couple of them will do large to-go orders if you call ahead.

When to come

Fall, winter and early spring. From September through early March the beach is quiet, the pools are heated (here is what that actually means in January), and the rates are a fraction of summer. Weekends in those months are flexible stays rather than seven-night weeks, which is what a Thursday-to-Sunday retreat needs. The honest tradeoff: summer and spring-break weeks are seven-night minimums, they book many months out, and they cost what a peak beach week costs. A church retreat in July is possible but it is not the smart version of this trip.

If you are looking at the holidays, read what a holiday week is like down here first; those weeks carry a longer minimum.

What it costs per person

The math is the part that surprises people. A beach house for 44 sounds expensive until you divide it. In the quiet season, a three-night weekend on one side of Easy Breezy split across 22 people, or both sides split across 44, lands in the range of what a mid-priced hotel room costs per night, and that is with the pool, the kitchens and the beach included. Add groceries for group meals and you are usually well under a retreat-center package. I would rather send you the real number for your dates than quote a figure here that goes stale, so tell me the weekend and the head count and I will do the per-person math for you.

We also run a small discount for church groups booking 2027 retreats. Mention it when you write and I will apply it to the quote.

What to ask before you book

Whatever house you are looking at, ours or anyone else's, ask these four things and you will avoid most retreat-weekend surprises. First, is there a room that seats your whole group at once, and where are the chairs coming from. Second, how many full kitchens and how many refrigerators, because one kitchen for 40 people is a bottleneck by Saturday morning. Third, is there an elevator, since church groups span three generations more often than other groups do. Fourth, what is the minimum stay for the dates you want, and does it change in the shoulder season. Easy Breezy answers all four with two great rooms, two kitchens, an elevator on each side and flexible off-season weekends, which is why I wrote this guide around it.

Common questions

How many people can a church retreat house in Gulf Shores sleep? Easy Breezy, our Fort Morgan duplex, sleeps 44 across 18 bedrooms and 19 baths when both sides are booked, or 22 on one side. Lemonshello in Gulf Shores sleeps 20 in eight bedrooms.

Is there a room big enough for a group session? Each side of Easy Breezy has a Gulf-front great room that opens to the balcony, and the two kitchens and dining areas seat a crowd. Most retreats run sessions in one great room and meals on the other side, or outside by the pools in the shoulder season.

When is the best time of year for a church retreat at the beach? Fall, winter and early spring. Rates are well below summer, weekends are flexible rather than seven-night stays, and the beach is quiet. Summer and spring-break weeks are seven-night minimums and book far ahead.

Are there age rules? We are not able to rent to groups under the age of 25, and the person booking must be an adult who stays with the group. If yours is a youth retreat with adult leaders, email me first and we will talk it through.

Most of our 2027 retreat weekends are still open as I write this, and I answer these notes myself. Send your dates and head count to guestinfo@gsbeachlife.com or through the contact page, and I will tell you which configuration fits and what it works out to per person.
